Joi AI Review: Big Cast, Video Calls and a Meter That Never Stops

What the chat is like

The homepage reads like a casting call. Every card has a name, an age and a mini biography: Avery, a 21-year-old bassist after a no-strings arrangement, Grace, a 33-year-old homemaker hoping for a husband, Clara, a 42-year-old singer in Rome, plus fantasy picks such as a high elf heiress and an ork bouncer. Most of the cast are women, with a few men in the mix.

According to the terms, you can talk to a companion by text, by voice and, where the feature works for your device and plan, through real-time video calls. You can also build your own character from a written prompt on the generator page. One catch for builders: the terms say Joi owns every character you create and can flip a private one to public. You can ask support to switch it back or delete it.

How far it goes (NSFW rules)

Adult chat is allowed, with a twist. The generator page says Joi runs separate SFW and NSFW modes for users over 18, and the terms tie erotic and sexually explicit messages to Neurons, the in-house currency, rather than to the subscription. So the NSFW side is open, but it is metered.

The limits are strict and spelled out. The safety guidelines say a RoBERTa classifier screens every user message and every bot reply, and a flagged line gets a canned safe answer. The banned list covers the hard limits you would expect, from exploitation to taboo family themes, and it also rules out politics and religion. Photo uploads, face replacement and undressing tools are not offered, and recreating a real person is banned.

The terms themselves are sloppy here. One clause reads as if sexually explicit content were banned outright, while another sells erotic messages for Neurons. We read the first as a ban on the illegal themes it lists, but it is a confusing document for a site that clearly sells adult content.

Pictures, voice and video

Media comes from two places. In chat, the safety guidelines say pictures are pulled from prepared folders made by Joi's own team, with signed agreements from the people featured, and an algorithm decides when to send one. On the generator page you type a prompt and pick realistic, anime or hentai styles, with a consistency option meant to keep one face across several images. The page admits results still vary.

Opening media costs extra. The terms list up to 120 Neurons to view a photo and up to 1,900 Neurons to view a video, depending on the theme. Video calls need camera and microphone access, and the terms warn the feature may not exist in every region or plan and can be changed or pulled at any time.

What it costs

Joi does not publish its prices. The terms describe a free Basic tier with limited access and a Premium subscription you can pay per month, per quarter, per half year or per year, and say prices shift with region, plan length and promotions. We found no public pricing page, so the numbers only appear after you register.

Premium is just the cover charge. Bot Subscriptions unlock individual characters and only work while Premium is active. Neurons pay for erotic messages, photos, videos and virtual gifts: the terms say reading one romantic message costs 4 Neurons. Regular customers may get better rates, but no figures are given. Payment options in the terms are cards, Google Pay, Apple Pay and, in some places, crypto.

Privacy, billing and refunds

The terms say the charge shows on your statement as joi.com, and the operator is Novi Limited, registered in Cyprus. You can cancel at any time under My Subscriptions in your settings, and Premium stays active until the paid period ends. A failed renewal drops you to Basic after seven days.

Refunds are narrow. The refund policy allows a claim within 14 days only for card fraud, a first accidental Neuron pack purchase (full if unspent, partial if partly used) or an account Joi closed on its own. Partial subscription periods and spent Neurons are not refunded. Refund requests get a first reply within 72 hours, and the support page lists an email address and a US toll-free phone line.

Two privacy points deserve attention. The privacy policy says your text and voice messages are used to develop the AI, and that session recordings go to Microsoft if you accept them at sign-up. Worse, both the terms and the refund policy warn that if you file a chargeback, Joi may hand over your private chats to prove the charge was valid.
